my story
Throughout my young life, I tried multiple movement disciplines – gymnastics, football, athletics, and martial arts, all of them a way of exploring my body and witnessing what I could do with it. Then, my great love came along and pulled me into its embrace: dancing. It was an instant love, all-encompassing. I danced every day after school and weekends. I'd found the thing that held my focus, challenged me, and brought me untold joy.
At 18, I moved to New York to study and dance at The Ailey School. Not only was it an opportunity to to dance alongside other bodies that looked like mine, other black bodies, but to be a part of this renowned institution and learn from masters of their craft was incredibly life-affirming.
Dance allowed me to be with my body in an extremely potent way that I still find difficult to put into words. Even though I chose to step away from it in my early 20s, I still had an insatiable desire for movement - it just spoke to me: the simple act of exploring my body in its entirety completely opened up my world.
After I came back to the UK (and having left a big part of me in NYC), I was still searching for something to satisfy this craving to move and be moved. Along the way, I decided to try yoga where I met my teacher, Leila Sadeghee. This happenstance yoga class – intended to help me reconnect with my body – did that AND set me on my spiritual path. Leila’s teachings are profound and, over the past 13 years, have opened doorways in my yogic and spiritual practice, which I had never previously thought possible. And I am forever grateful.
and NOw…
Today, my ongoing training and practice combine an excitement and passion for yoga asana (it is exhilarating to see what our bodies are capable of, and I continuously get to meet my body in new ways and on so many levels), but more than that, the exploration of tantric philosophy and my commitment to the spiritual practices has been - and continues to be - one of the most amazing, revelatory, powerful and life-affirming paths I've taken. The joy of being both a teacher and in continuous studentship, from learning with a true beginner’s mind to, in turn, being able to guide people in their own awakening, liberation, and discovery, is more uplifting and gratifying than I ever could have imagined.
My classes are imbued with a deep embodiment of the spiritual practice I commit to each day: Yoga goes beyond the asana, and I invite my students into a deep relationship with themselves, their bodies, with consciousness and with others. My classes are an invitation to go deeper and create the grounds for meaningful self-discovery, weaving philosophy, dynamic, challenging physical asana and slower, potent embodied movement sequences.
I hope practice with me provides the antidote to our current societal values of hyper-individuality and also as medicine for the ups and downs of daily life. I believe (and know from my own experience) that through our own orientation towards awakening and liberation, we can begin to build deep connections to ourselves and each other
Thank you for being here with me as witness to my ongoing journey as a teacher, student, seeker and artist. I am so grateful to share this with you, and I can’t wait to connect soon.
